Modern Foreign Languages
Through their study of Modern Foreign Languages, we want all our students to be more analytical, more creative with their use of language and to broaden their cultural horizons.
Here are some suggestions of MFL programmes available currently (Jan 2023) on various streaming platforms.
#BeMoreKnowledgeable
Our students begin their language learning experience always working at full sentence level and initially from a first-person perspective. They learn how to talk about themselves, travel and tourism, education, role models and future plans as well as social and environmental issues. Each topic is sequenced with key language at the forefront of the curriculum and this develops in complexity over time, with careful analysis of language use embedded in the language acquisition process.
#BeMoreInvolved
Pupils actively engage with the Spelling and Translation Bees at Key Stage 3 and compete at a regional and national level. Additionally, pupils from many year groups are involved with our Primary School outreach programme and the development of a language discovery day for our feeder primary schools.
#BeMoreIndependent
The MFL department encourages regular practice of vocabulary and core structures to embed language and develop fluency. Students get involved with house competitions and can win house points for their entries as well as competitions run by universities, where they work in a very independent way. Our students are also provided with a list of sources for foreign language viewing material, and this is actively encouraged as means to both enjoy the language and to aid comprehension.
#BeMoreAmbitious
Lessons draw on a wealth of cultural references to add a real-life dimension to the learning of a foreign language. All students engage with a range of competitive and spoken activities which enable them to develop their fluency and confidence with language learning. There are MFL-related competitions for all year groups and as well as a comprehensive trips and visits programme.
We encourage our pupils to take risks as language learners and to see the broader benefits that language learning can bring, in terms of study and the world of work. Each year, a number of our students have gone on to study a language or a language-related degree at Oxbridge and other top universities.
